Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was raised by her Aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to be creative and drawn by art. Her aunt worked the evening shift in the role of a nurse so that she could follow her passion for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she showed her. Her time in Selma would later inspire her to direct a movie that focused on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a student at Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English along with African American Studies. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in the college. She began her career working as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the trash of one of members of the juries. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalistic duties and decided to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio after graduating from college. In 1999, she founded her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
